The Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada (CCAAC) supports Bill C-626, An Act to Amend the Statistics Act. This private member’s bill, put forward by Ted Hsu, Member of Parliament for the riding of Kingston and the Islands, calls for the restoration of Canada’s long-form census.
The CCAAC understands that good public policy making requires comprehensive, detailed, reliable data that is comparable over time. The long-form census provided key demographic data that is fundamental for child care planning.
Therefore, we decry the replacement of the long-form census with the National Household Survey (NHS). We believe that its flawed data is not a reliable source for developing good child care policy at the national and provincial/territorial level or for planning services at the local level.
