BC Child Care advocates mobilize after Budget Update says no new funds for now

Child care advocates across Canada were surprised and disappointed that the new BC government’s Budget Update did not include new funds to begin implementing the $10aDay Child Care Plan.

Government officials, including Premier John Horgan, have confirmed that they are “still committed to creating a $10-a-day universal child care program”.

However, Minister of Finance Carole James indicates that “a difference of opinion” with the B.C. Green Party means the details still need to be worked out.”

Child Care advocates in BC are turning up the pressure on both the BC NDP and BC Greens to take swift action to help families living with child care chaos, and get moving on the implementation of the $10-a-day plan.

“The NDP and Green child care platforms are already aligned in key areas – including affordability, quality and access, and so we are confident that any outstanding differences can be promptly resolved, said Sharon Gregson, spokesperson for the $10-a-day campaign.

“After years of research, study and consultation – the evidence is in. Now, it’s time for strong public policy leading to immediate action on affordability for families, more licensed spaces, and investment in the ECE workforce, as promised by both parties,” she added.
